What’s a BMI All About?
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to assess whether a person is within a healthy weight range for their height.
- It is a calculation of your height in relation to your weight
- A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered to be in the healthy weight range
- It can be used by adults between the ages of 20 and 65 years
- For those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or serious sports people, the test may be unreliable.
You can calculate your BMI on the Heart Foundation BMI Calculator here
Please note the BMI is not an appropriate test for everyone. For those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, aged under 20 years or over 65 years, some ethnic groups, or those with very high levels of exercise, the test may be unreliable. If you are unsure if the BMI is an appropriate measurement for you, please consult your doctor.
