Be Healthy Be Active Teaching Programme
The Be Healthy Be Active FREE teaching programme is for teachers and their students aged 11 -13 years. It is designed to encourage healthy eating, physical activity and mental wellbeing. The programme is implemented with two partners – the AUT/Millennium (Auckland University of Technology/Millennium) and the New Zealand Nutrition Foundation.
This age group was chosen as at this age students start to make food and lifestyle choices independently of their parents and it helps to set up healthy living habits for their lifetime.
Be Healthy Be Active was developed by teachers at Learning Media for teachers, and is in line with the New Zealand Education Curriculum in the areas of health and physical education. When the programme was developed, there was a recognised lack of teaching material for teachers of this age group. The programme was successfully tested and piloted prior to launch.
The programme contains a combination of resources including :
- Teachers’ Resource Book
- 16 Read & Respond Cards
- Food plate posters in English and Maori
- Website www.behealthybeactive.co.nz
- Online Activities encouraging understanding of healthy eating and exercise
- Online Journal, where teacher can set and mark students assignments. There is also a online blog. Teachers are encouraged to register their class.
The material is available free of charge for teachers, simply contact us for details.
Printed material and regular e-mail communication goes out to all schools teaching this age group; as well as school visits and attendance at conferences. To date 25% of schools teaching this age groups are using the On Line resources, and many more are using other elements of the printed material.
